Meet Gary

I’ve decided that our media-driven world needs to reshape the way society views the practice of Yoga and the people who practice it..it’s not just hot, young people performing crazy acrobatics! So I’m fighting it by posting what real Yoga looks like with some true Yogins and Yoginis that hail right here in little old Adelaide. Each week I’m asking them the same questions so you all can get an insight as to why Yoga is for everyBODY!

Gary in Fire log pose/agnistambhasana

Meet Gary

Gary began practicing yoga with me as part of a Corporate Yoga class at his workplace in 2009, but joined classes at the studio after wanting more! Back then I had to physically help him out of a pose like agnistambhasana, seen opposite. With dedication his asana practice blossomed and, as you’ll read below, so too did his holistic view on life.

What drew you to begin practicing Yoga?

There are 2 main reasons that drew me to yoga. One was  the need for increased flexibility in my muscles and joints to help me deal with the daily rigours of parenting 4 boys. Secondly, I studied Indian History in Year 11 and 12 looking deeply at the different religions in India. Yoga(not a religion) kept being mentioned with its leaders and teachings which  intrigued me. Its values and beliefs can easily be applied in daily life especially at the fast pace we live with now.

What is your favourite class and why do you keep a regular practice?

My favourite two classes are Jivamukti Open and Spiritual Warrior. Jivamukti Open is a fun class where you can work at your own level with breath control. Spiritual Warrior is a more structured class where you follow a set routine each time requiring a bit more discipline. They are both dynamic classes that make you feel  reinvigorated  ready for the day ahead. As a surf boat rower I commit to a regular practice to keep my flexibility and as a primary teacher the meditation and values lessons help keep me thinking  positively in both the classroom and life.

Have the philosophies and/or practical practice of Yoga penetrated your daily life and if you, how?

There is always a renewed energy after each session that leads into a positive outlook for the day. The philosophies are important as a wakeup call because you can become so absorbed in your daily life that you forget the little things that make you happy and keep you going, but they also make you think about the bigger picture around the world and how your positive outlook can have a ripple effect with others.

In your view is Yoga for everyBODY?

Yoga can be for any person, age, shape or size. There are no limits. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to find an hour to escape the fast paced world they live in and to put a bit of perspective back in their lives.

Whether the idea of balancing on your head, hands or arms lights you up or terrifies you, this workshop will safely support and progress your practice of turning your world on its head. There are just so many benefits when you invert:

  • Gives you an energy boost
  • Allows for a complete focus on the present moment
  • Provides a change of perspective
  • Is healthy for the heart
  • Sends a rush of blood to the brain
  • Builds core strength
  • Builds upper body strength
  • Requires spine stabilization
  • Is really fun!

So come along and let me flip your mind in a 2-hour inversion workshop on Sunday February 26th beginning at 10:15am. You’ll unpack the big four; handstand, forearm balance, headstand and shoulderstand.

The advanced asana workshops are fun, intimate and encourage growth in each student’s asana practice on a personal level. In order to maintain individual attention and give each student optimal care and assistance, enrolments are limited to 12 students. Students are also encouraged to attend the Spiritual Warrior Jivamukti Yoga class that runs from 9-10:15am at the studio beforehand, in order to warm up the body in preparation for the workshop.

GO YOGA only run a few advanced courses per year, and as student numbers are strictly limited to maximise individual care and attention, they usually book out fast. Students can book in prior to Feb 19th at the “early bird” rate of $30, payment via EFT. Jivamukti Yoga Summer and New Year Mini Retreat

Who needs time out to recharge and reset after the silly season, but can’t find time or money for a vacation? Gift yourself (or a loved-one) the Go yoga mini-retreat. This one will be big!

People generally tend to experience heightened emotions at the dawn of a new year. Nearly half of us experience increased stress, which puts our health at risk. Unless you implement effective relaxation and positive self-care techniques, your worries may lead to less beneficial or even self-destructive behaviours.

In this full day retreat you’ll take time to pause and reflect on how you want to spend 2017. What can you do in 2017 that will best serve you? What are good uses of your precious energy this year? We’ll also discuss bucket lists, intentions, the mechanisms of desire and the conscious way to make dreams come true. The day will also include two Yoga practices – beginning with a dynamic Jivamukti Yoga class and ending with a Hatha Yoga class, meditation on intention, action and surrender, and extended relaxation.

The early bird cost of this full day mini-retreat is $120 if paid prior to Monday January 2nd 2017. Price increases after this date to $140. Freshly ground coffee and tea, yummy morning tea and a delicious vegan buffet lunch is included (as always) in the price!
Just email jackie@goyogaadelaide.com for registration details to secure your place.

*Money will be fully refunded if cancellation is made prior to Monday January 2nd 2017, absolutely no refunds after this date.

Chakra Balancing Mini Retreat

In Yogic tradition, the human body has seven energy centres, known as chakras, that affect us physically and emotionally. When these energy centres are healthy and open, so are we in both body and mind. Yet when they become blocked, as may occur through injury, distress or disconnection, we too are blocked from living our best.

Chakra balancing yoga is a full and absolute mind-body-spirit practice. At a time when many people feel disconnected from themselves and others, Chakra Yoga can help to heal the body and free the heart to feel a new sense of happiness, peace and completeness.

This mini-retreat will begin with an invigorating Jivamukti Open Yoga practice and meditation, then the chakras will be studied. The day will finish with a Chakra Balancing Yoga practice, where you will be guided through a series of yoga poses, affirmations and mantras that awaken and balance each of the chakras as taught to me by my teacher, Sharon Gannon.

The early bird cost of this full day mini-retreat is $100 if paid prior to Monday June 27th 2016. Price increases after this date to $120. Morning tea (including chakra smoothies!) and a full vegan lunch is included in the price. *Money will be fully refunded if cancellation is made prior to Monday June 27th 2016, absolutely no refunds after this date.

Kicking Your Asana Workshop Series

Have you been deeply observing your yoga practice over time and still feel that some poses (asana) don’t quite feel right? Or are you an experienced Yogin ready to take your postures to the next level? Do you want to learn ways to find a balance of both strength and grace in your poses – even those you thought were unattainable?

Starting May 15th and continuing every Sunday for 4 weeks, Go Yoga will be running a special 90 minute “Kicking your Asana” workshop series at 10:15am.

The workshops are fun, intimate and encourage growth in each student’s asana practice on a personal level. Week 1 will explore where locked in tension and resistance lies with twists and binds. Week 2 will overcome fear and find steadiness and joy through Inversion practice. Week 3 will focus on breaking down Sun Salutation A and B, we will be springing back and doing push-up with ease and grace! Finally, week 4 will give you the tools needed to spend more time in the air (and less with your face on the floor!) in arm balances.

Students can book into all four workshops prior to May 9th at the “early bird” rate of $90. Alternatively, they may pick and choose any session(s) for $25/session if paid before May 9th. Cost on or after May 10th is $110 for the full course or $30 per session. *Money will be fully refunded if cancellation is made prior to Tuesday May 10th, absolutely no refunds after this date.

Go Yoga Every Damn Day

Yoga – meditation, pranayama, asana – all of these every day for the month of February!

Individually and as a culture we’re disconnected from the present moment and our bodies in many ways. We don’t always value or listen to our body, but a daily Yoga practice can help.

By having an everyday routine we commit to showing up in our bodies and in our breath, we can be more curious so that we can sense things on more subtle levels. If something in our life is a little off, we’ll feel it before it gets worse.

Commit to Go Yoga Every Damn Day (GYEDD) in February – with 4 brand new class times added to the timetable, including the new Spiritual Warrior class, you can come to as many as you wish everyday for the entire month for $120.

A regular Yoga practice is a gift to ourself, a refuge, a tool with which we can move through the ups and downs of life more skilfully, then we can be more present to live every moment!

Lounging around watching my vision materialise!

Studio 2

Turns out the flu and colds going around this winter are hard to shake. I’ve heard so many of you and your families succumbing for weeks, I hope the sunshine expected at the end of the week brings new health to you all. I myself have been alternating classes with deep rest to try to lose the chest infection and subsequent husky cartoon character tone my voice has acquired!

This extra time at home has allowed me to experience the transformation of my large backyard shed into a magnificent, warm and inviting Yoga room. It has literally been a labour of love and I am forever grateful for the selfless work of my husband and father-in-law. As many of you artists out there may appreciate, it’s extremely difficult to articulate a vision but due to the combined efforts of many, mine has materialised. I simply can not wait for you all to come on over for classes in what I hope will be a truly grand, sacred and comforting space!

We are marking the opening of this new studio with a special 90 minute Jivamukti class on Sunday September 20th beginning at 11am. Tickets are $26 ($30 on the day) and include a Tofurkey vegan sausage sizzle afterwards. Contact me to book ASAP as I’d really like to see all of you there!
